Hedberg & Son Roofing has been proudly serving Central Iowa since 1980, built on a foundation of hard work, integrity, and strong relationships.

The company began when co-owner Eric Hedberg placed a small ad in the Altoona Herald. That simple ad led to the company’s very first job—a roof replacement on an old hog barn between Bondurant and Altoona, Iowa. From that first project forward, the business grew steadily through word of mouth, quality craftsmanship, and trust.

Even before officially starting the roofing company, Eric partnered with Charlie Hollingshead in the late 1970s installing cellulose insulation in attics and sidewalls. This work complemented the seasonal nature of roofing and allowed the business to provide year-round services—helping establish early momentum that would shape the company’s future.

From the beginning, relationships played a critical role in Hedberg & Son Roofing’s success. One of the most influential was with Gannon Roofing Supply. Eric learned extensively from Gene Gannon and his sons, who operated both the supply company and AAA Roofing—still in operation today under Brad Gannon and his sons. Gene’s oldest son, Tom, became one of Eric’s closest friends until his passing. Now 98 years old, Gene remains a valued mentor, and Eric continues to visit him regularly. Eric credits Gene as a major influence in the longevity and success of Hedberg & Son Roofing.

In 1985, Eric married Carolyn Hedberg, who became co-owner of the company. Together, they continued to grow the business while maintaining its family-centered values. In 1991, their son Donnie joined the company full time, bringing fresh energy and helping attract several long-term team members—including Roger Ross, who remains with the company more than 36 years later. While Donnie eventually moved on to pursue other opportunities, his impact on the company’s growth is still felt today.

Over the decades, Hedberg & Son Roofing has truly become a multigenerational family business. All of Eric and Carolyn’s grandsons worked for the company straight out of high school, along with several granddaughters. One grandson, Jeffrey, joined the company over 18 years ago immediately after high school and has become a key employee. He is positioned as a future part-owner of the business. Jeffrey and his wife have three sons and a daughter, and his boys often help during the summers when school is out—continuing the tradition into the next generation.

In 2011, Chris Sabus joined the company as office manager. Eric first met Chris in 1992 when Chris worked at Gannon Roofing Supply, and his industry knowledge has been an invaluable asset ever since. The company is also deeply supported by the Contreras and Landeros families, who have been integral to operations since 2000—especially Francisco, his five sons, his brother-in-law Uriel Landeros, and Uriel’s nephews.

Today, Hedberg & Son Roofing operates with a strong sales and operations team that keeps three steep-slope crews, two repair crews, and one low-slope crew consistently busy—employing more than 30 people. The combined experience of the team is remarkable, with over 260 years of roofing knowledge represented by long-tenured employees including Eric, Roger, Victor, Francisco, Chris, Scott, Jessie, and Jeffrey.

The company is supported by a dedicated office staff of four, including Clara, Drew, Chris Sabus, Jessie Goodwin, and Scott Tibbits. Sales and operations are led by Eric, with the support of co-owner Carolyn Hedberg and Eric’s brother-in-law, Dan Sparks.

For more than four decades, Hedberg & Son Roofing has remained a proud, family-run business—built on craftsmanship, honesty, long-standing relationships, and generations of loyal employees. Many team members have been with the company for 30 years or more, a testament to the culture, values, and people behind the name.
